Internship

The PTU intern program offers international and Ugandan Graduate students an invaluable opportunity for practical field experience in health education and disease prevention projects. The need for health education in Northern Uganda is very great, and the interns play an important role in improving the quality of life and health outcomes among the communities they serve.

Current Projects

  • Hygiene and sanitation education
  • Domestic Violence prevention
  • HIV/AIDS prevention
The health projects are based in Pajule and the surrounding rural villages. Interns will live in Pajule and become integrated into the community, working closely with the PTU board, community members, and the locally trained health educators.

Activities Performed by Interns

  • Facilitating education sessions among small community groups
  • Assisting in the Development of health education curricula
  • Evaluation of health education projects and other PTU activities
  • Collection and analysis of data for project monitoring and improvement.
  • Assisting in the installment and maintenance of health and hygiene facilities, as well as instruction in their use

Applicant Requirements

  • Have a bachelor's degree or higher.
  • Be enrolled in an accredited Public Health program.
  • Be willing to spend a minimum of four weeks working with PTU.
  • Pay the program fee.
  • Complete the application by the deadline.
  • Preference will be given to those with past experience living and working in developing countries.
Accepted Interns will be in contact with the PTU Health Program Coordinator for the four weeks leading up to the trip to develop a rough work plan and tentative schedule. These will vary depending on the background and area of interest of the intern, and the amount of time the intern is available for the project.

Most weekends will be free time, though some projects may require trips to remote villages during weekend periods. In this event, comparable free time will be allotted during the week.

While interns will be expected to work hard and get a lot done during their time in Pajule, the atmosphere is very relaxed and informal. Past interns have found their experience among the Acholi to be one of welcoming people, lasting friendships, good food, and much laughter.

Nearby attractions include Murchison Falls, Kidepo Game Reserve, and the cities of Gulu, Ktigum, and Kolongo. Longer trips can take visitors to beautiful Sipi Falls at the base of Mt. Elgon, whitewater rafting on the Nile at Jinja, the vibrant city life of Kampala, and the beautiful beach resorts and botanical gardens in the city of Entebbe.
